Why Gutter Cleaning Is the Most Skipped — and Costliest — Home Task
4 min read
Eugene averages over 46 inches of rain per year. Your gutters move all of that water away from your foundation — when they fail, you find out quickly and expensively.
What clogged gutters actually cause
Foundation damage
$5,000–$30,000Water pooling at the base of your home saturates soil and causes settling, cracks, and water intrusion into basements and crawl spaces.
Roof rot and leaks
$1,500–$8,000Standing water in gutters backs up under shingles, rotting the fascia board and causing leaks into the attic and ceiling.
Siding and paint damage
$2,000–$6,000Overflowing gutters pour water down your siding repeatedly, causing rot, staining, paint failure, and mold.
Pest entry points
$500–$3,000Debris-filled gutters are prime nesting spots for mosquitoes, birds, and rodents — who can then find their way inside.
How often to clean gutters in Eugene
In the Pacific Northwest, gutters should be cleaned at minimum twice per year — once in late spring after pollen and seed drop, and once in late fall after leaves have fallen. Homes with overhanging trees may need quarterly cleaning.
Signs your gutters need immediate attention
- Water spilling over the sides during rain
- Gutters visibly sagging or pulling away from the fascia
- Plants growing out of gutters
- Staining or mold on siding directly below gutters
- Pooling water near the foundation after rain
